Sustainable Summer

Sustainability Under Pressure: Financial Reporting as a Stumbling Block

The pressure on companies to operate sustainably is decreasing. Both the European Parliament and publicly listed companies are scaling back their sustainability ambitions. In particular, the mandatory sustainability reporting – as outlined in the European CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) – is under strain. Where transparency on environmental and social impact was set to become the norm, we now see delays, softening of requirements, and growing political resistance.

For many businesses, especially in the food industry, this creates dilemmas. On the one hand, there are internal ambitions and societal expectations to act sustainably; on the other, external pressure is easing. Reporting ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) data is complex and costly. Now that the obligation appears to be weakening, some companies are considering postponing or limiting their disclosures – particularly when shareholders prioritize short-term financial performance.

The question, then, is not just what we report, but whyAnd how will the future of CSRD look in a shifting geopolitical landscape?

Mila Verhaag, Business Analyst at ACE + Company, presents the future role of CSRD and how this helps companies define value and tying financial success to environmental and social accountability.
